The Global Ocean Concept
What sets the Oceanário apart is its cohesive layout. Instead of moving between unrelated tanks, visitors follow a continuous journey anchored by a 5-million-liter saltwater central aquarium that represents the global ocean. From multiple levels and viewpoints, you can observe large pelagic species swimming alongside smaller schooling fish, creating the sense of a single, living sea.
I've stood there, staring at the massive glass wall and just seeing the sea life pass by. It's quite impressive and frankly a bit scary if you realize there's just a (thick) sheet of glass between you and a crushing amount of water. Compared to other aquaria that I've visited, like Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco, Sea Life in Scheveningen (Netherlands), and Seaworld in San Diego, this one seems to be unique in that sence.
Encircling this central tank are four carefully designed habitats representing different marine regions of the planet. Each one recreates specific environmental conditions, from temperature to lighting, allowing species to behave naturally.
You will encounter highlights such as:
- Sea otters in the temperate Pacific environment, known for their playful behavior
- Magellanic penguins in a cold Antarctic-inspired habitat
- Colorful reef fish and corals representing tropical Indian Ocean waters
- Sunfish (Mola mola) drifting through the open ocean tank, one of the aquarium’s most distinctive residents
This structure makes the visit intuitive and engaging, even for travelers with limited time.
Beyond the Main Exhibits
In addition to its core aquarium, the Oceanário features permanent installations that explore the relationship between nature, art, and conservation.
Forests Beneath the Waves
Created by renowned Japanese aquascaper Takashi Amano, Forests Beneath the Waves is one of the largest nature aquariums in the world. A 40-meter-long, U-shaped freshwater tank showcases submerged trees, aquatic plants, and thousands of small fish arranged as a living landscape. The atmosphere is calm and contemplative, offering a clear contrast to the scale and movement of the main ocean exhibits.
ONE – The Ocean as You Have Never Felt It
This immersive audiovisual installation uses large-scale projections and sound to explore humanity’s emotional and physical connection to the sea. With a strong focus on the Portuguese coastline, it reinforces the Oceanário’s conservation message through art rather than traditional displays.
